How do you choose an accessible Shopify theme?

Published 2026-09-14

Choose a theme by testing its real demo with keyboard navigation, screen reader landmarks, visible focus, contrast, forms, menus, product options, and cart behavior. Review the vendor's accessibility documentation and update history, but do not accept a label as proof. Your installed apps and customizations will change the result, so plan a full audit before launch.

Test the demo, not the claims

Navigate every menu and dialog without a mouse. Check heading structure, control names, focus order, form errors, zoom, and mobile target size. A polished visual demo can still fail basic interaction tests.

Plan for the store you will build

List the apps, custom sections, and purchase-flow changes you expect. Test those integrations in a development theme, because the final combined storefront determines accessibility, not the untouched theme package.
